I can't install Vmware tools on Windows 2000

I recently installed Windows 2000 on VMware Workstation 15.5.2 and I tried to install VMware tools for windows 2000 but is showed me a popup that said "Microsoft Runtime DLLs cannot be installed on this operation system. Please see Microsoft KB835732 for detalies."

I dont know how to set up VMware tools and i need it for the resolution to change to fullscreen as it wont allow me to change it from the control panel....\\

How do I fix this problem?

Have you updated the Win2000 in the guest to SP3 or 4?  I forget which one is the minimum required to run.

I have / had the same problem.

There are two similar questions on this forum, but alas the links to Microsoft they provide are waaay outdated and don't work anymore:

Re: Windows 2000 VMWare Tools installation problem

Vmware tools installer crashes (win 2k pro)

So I searched the Microsoft site directly: Explore

The first hit helped to solve the problem: Microsoft Update Catalog

I downloaded the patch for Windows 2000, transferred it to the virtual machine, and run it. After reboot, the VMware Tools installed just fine.

Supplement: I'd recommend to store the downloaded file somewhere, I wouldn't count on Microsoft keeping it forever.

Hi,

Try installing the Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB835732):

Apparently there is an update that replaces KB835732 for Windows 2000.

It is KB891861:

Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB891861)

Maybe only if you are have SP4 installed.

But it seemed to fix the issue for me.
