How to see a USB drive in a VM?

Newbie. Please be gentle.

I have enabled USB 2.0 support and plugged in an external USB drive. It gets disconnected from the host and VM --> Removable Devices --> USB Devices shows a check mark against "Myson Century Removable Disk (Port 1)". Unfortunately, the USB disk does not show up in File Explorer. What am I doing wrong?

I'd say it was a bug. That's the way it should work.

W2K pro... that could be part of the problem.. why not upgrade the guest to WinXP?

What does Windows 2000 device manager report as the USB controller type?

Good question KevinG. Intel82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller is listed under USB Controllers but there is another entry under Other Devices for Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller with a ?/! indicating that it is not recognised and/or working properly. I'll try uninstalling and rebooting to see what happens.

Bingo!

Uninstalling the unknown device and rebooting the VM did the trick. Thanks for the pointer.
