Hi,
I'm trying vmware workstation 7.1.3 on an Ubuntu 10.4 host.
I've an image of a harddisk from my old Windows XP professional PC. I wonder, if it's possible to create a virtual win xp pro guest from this image?
In the manual_ws71.pdf I found some information about `Creating a Virtual Machine from a System Image'. There is mentioned an Import - Export facility (Conversion wizard). However, this seem to come solely with the windows version of vmware. I run a Ubuntu host system.
Any help or pointer to more information is really appreciated.
Cheers,
Rudiger
what type of image do you have exactly ?
The image is a binary copy of the harddisk ntfs partition into a file, created by using dd. I can mount it at Ubuntu using the loop device:
sudo mount -o loop /media/wd1tb/einstein/einstein.sda1.bin /mnt

Hi Rudiger
have a look at my notes here
http://sanbarrow.com/vmdk-howtos.html#calcgeoexample
if you create a vmdk for the dd-image you already got the first half done
Hm, so I create a new, empty win xp guest and use the dd image as the virtual harddisk via vmdk?
Cheers,
Rudiger
yes
you would create a VM with a buslogic controller
when that is done you would use Converter 3.0.3 against the vmx-file and that it will fix the driver problems
if you need specific help let me know
