Infinite amount really.

It just stops at the space used on the hard drive.

Rule of thumb i use:

1 VM needs 1 CPU in most cases and the hard drive space suggested in a typical easy install is enough to get started.

Running more then 1 VM at the same time is in my view limited to the real cores of a CPU.

The i5 has 4 cores so in your case I would not run more then 3 VM's max at the same time as your RAM is limited to 4 GB.

Host RAM will be the first limit you run into before anything else.

When using VMWare Workstation, despite what some might believe that the number of VM Guests is limited by the space on the HDD or the amount of memory, the truth from personal experience is that even if you have 16GB of memory and 1TB of free drive space, if you're using VMWare on Windows, you're limited to 23 VM's. And if you're using VMWare on Linux, then you're limited to 33 VM's.
