How do I get the serial port com1 to give access through the virtual machine?

I am using windows98 on my virtual machine, and I have added com1 as a physical serial port. When I power on however is says "unable on open com1 serial port: access is denied".

Please help me. I have no idea what everyone is talking about when they say enter the vmx files correctly. Windows xp on host.

There is nothing using that port that I know of

Can you attach the vmware.log and .vmx files from the directory containing your Guest?
