Host-only disabled with VMware Workstation 5.5.1

Hi all,

I'm trying Vmware for the first time.

I have created a virtual machine with Red Hat Linux on Windows XP host.

I configured a Bridget Network connection and now I'd like to enable Host-only networking but this option is disabled and I don't know how to enable it.

I have a limitated knowledge of Vmware. anyone can help me ?

Joseph

1) I still do not see vmnet1 or vmnet8 in the output of " ipconfig /all " from the Windows XP host.

2) Your Linux gust has an IP that is on the same subnet as the host. This would not be the case if you want to use host-only networking.

Looks like you need to read the VMware Workstation documentation on how to configure virtual networking. Smiley Wink

Hi,

VMware 5.5.4 is available and also six. Upgrade to either one and see if that helps first.

Post the output from " ipconfig /all " from your Windows XP host.

Post the output from " ifconfig -a " from your Red Hat Linux guest.

Post the .vmx file from the virtual machine

Your virtual machine is currently configured for "Bridged" networking and I assume this is because you can not get "Host-Only" networking.

If you want to use host-only or NAT virtual networking, you are going to need to uninstall VMware and reinstall the software. You are missing the virtual network adapters vmnet1 & vmnet8 on the host.

The uninstall will NOT delete your virtual machines

thanks kevin and rbromfield.

I have installed VMware Workstation 6 and now Host-only is enable.

I have another network problem now. I've configured a static address (no DHCP) on my guest OS but there isn't communication between host (XP) and guest (RedHat) in Host-only mode.
