Host (Dell/ALPS) touchpad driver ineffective in Ubuntu guest

Using: Dell Precision M4700 laptop, 64-bit Windows 7 host, VMware Workstation 9, Ubuntu 12.10 guest

Seeing: Touchpad driver settings (particularly Senstivity/TouchGuard) adequate (albeit marginally) for host OS have no effect in guest.  Frequent spurious left mouse clicks are generated (making for frustrating text editing, unintended control selections, etc.).  Ubuntu toolbar System Settings window, choosing Mouse and Touchpad icon opens control with tab only for Mouse.

Re-installing VMware Tools has not helped.

Does anybody know how to make this work better?

Thanks,

Bob

Thanks, Ruby, but that does not seem to describe the issue I'm having.

FYI, I did find a relevant blog post linked from Ubuntu Communities: http://nwoki.wordpress.com/2012/10/02/multitouch-fix-for-alps-touchpad/.  Per my comment there yesterday, that attempted fix hosed my VM, and I had to reload it from back-up.

Still looking, maybe getting closer, though...

All the best,

Bob
