HCL for AMD SB850

Hi,

I'm planning to setup a home lab based on MSI 890GXM-G65 board and amd phenom ii x6 1055T processor. This board consists of SB850 chipset and in the VMware HCL only SB700 is listed.

Is SB850 sata controller supported for install of ESXi4.1 in SATA disks?

Thanks in advance!

Have a look on official HCL:

www.vmware.com/go/hcl

Or on whitebox configurations:

it's all on the above links, if it's not there then chance of it working would be quite slim ..

Thanks Andrew.

I have decided on MSI 880GM-E41 board in combination with AMD Phenom X6 1055T Processor. Just couple of Questions,

In the UltimateWhiteBox site its given as VMware versions supported as ESX4. I have to run Vmware ESXi4.1 on the system. If ESX4 is given on the list, is it understoood that ESXi4.1 is also supported?

I have planned for a "In the Box" setup with 16GB RAM for running 4 VMware workstation VM's for ESXi(2), Win2003(1), OpenFiler(1). So i will be not using the onboard NIC and also for internet connection to the system i will use a USB modem. So does this unsupported NIC cause any problem?

Regards,

Sures

Working with 4.0 does not mean that works also for 4.1 Smiley Sad

Maybe... But if generic 4 is specify, probably works for both.

ESXi will NOT install without a supported NIC. You will not be able to use a USB modem attached to the ESXi host although you might be able to use it passed through to a guest virtual machine. It would not qualify as a NIC.

Thanks Andrew.

Checked as far as i can in forums, but could not find a concrete evidence that this board works with ESXi4.1. But i will not buy anything till i get to know i can run ESXi4.1.

Please let me know is there any other good board which will run ESXi4.1 for sure with AM3 socket which can support AMD Phenom X6 1055T.

I haven't a well know model.

For production systems I always use hardware in HCL.

For lab usually Asus motherboard...

But I don't know a specific motherboard that support AMD Phenom X6 1055T.

Hi,

I'm not sure if i have understood you correctly. I'm planing to run ESXi & Win2003 in VMware workstation as VM. And i do not want internet to the VM and is enough only for the base host. Will still ESXi will not install into the workstation VM if the base host have a unsupported NIC? Please let me know.

If you plan to run ESXi in a VM then you have not to worry about HCL.

Be sure that hardware works with your host OS.

PS: I've not tried ESXi on VMware Server, I'm sure that it can work on Workstation and on ESXi, but not sure that also in VMware Server.

Sorry as we all seem to have mis understood your post and thought you were trying to install ESXi on the Motherboard. If you are installing workstation on a Windows operating system and installing ESXi as a virtual machine then you should have no problem
