Extremely slow Win XP guest on Win 7 host. Win 7 guest works fine

Hi,

I am using Workstation 7.1.5 on a Windows 7 64bit host.

My XP virtual machine is very unresponsive, the mouse is lagging and I must keep my mouse pointer still for one second before I click (otherwise it will click somewhere else along the path I was moving it).

I have tried several different XP virtual machines, all with the same result. However, when I try a Win 7 virtual machine everything works fine.

I know that the very same XP guest works fine on other Windows 7 hosts

Host:

     8 GB RAM

     Intel Core i5-3320M 2,6GHz

I have tried:

     Allocating RAM between 1-3 GB

     1 CPU/2 CPUS/1 CPU - 2 cores

     Updating/Reinstalling VMware Tools

     Removing memory swap/page file
     Reinstalling VMware Workstation

Different Input Preferences(Optimize mouse for games)

I would be very grateful for any tips, also on how I can test where the problem lies.

Disk operations to the .vmdk file are taking a long time.  Is this file really on the local C:drive, or is there a symbolic link in the path that directs it to a remote file system?  If it is on the local disk, perhaps defragmentation would help.
