Expanding Disk Capacity.

I need to expand disk capacity. Currently @ 100GB and have about 60GB free on the disk.

When trying to expand the disk i am getting the following error:

"The called function cannot be performed on the partial chains. Open the parent virtual disk.

Please let me know what i can do to fix it?

Thank you,

Glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue.

It was the .vmdk file's name. Snapshots are usually named <vmname>-00000x.vmdk.

Take a look at the following blog post: https://danieladeniji.wordpress.com/2013/11/07/technical-vmware-workstation-expanding-disk-error-the...

But, you will need some additional free space since the solution requires that you clone the existing virtual disk.

I have seen this. Do not have the space at the moment to clone the drive.

I would like to understand what is the cause of the issue?

and maybe....there is a other way to fix it?

Thanks.

You can't extend a disk that has open snapshots.

So basically you would need to commit any snapshots that you currently have.

The problem is that I cannot say with the current information we have if that is a safe thing to do.

IF your disk is setup as a split disk, then you should be fine.

However if your disk is a single growing disk file then your 60GB free might not be sufficient as if your virtual disk is 100GB it might need up to 100GB (and a bit more) in order to commit the snapshots.

PS: it wouldn't hurt if you make a backup of your VM to an external disk before doing anything else.

Do so with Workstation and your VM shut down.

I do have a backup and deleted all the snapshots, still getting an error?

I believe the disk is split.

What information do you require?

What do you mean by "commit any snapshots"?

I have deleted all the snapshots, and the vm is shutdown,

According to the screenshot "CM01-000002.vmdk", the VM still has active snapshots. If no snapshot shows up in the Snapshot Manager, create a new Snapshot from the Snapshot Manager, ad delete it immediately after creating it. This should consolidate the left over snapshots.

Thank you. How can you tell the VM still has active snapshots?

That fixed it, I was able to expand the disk after i created and deleted snapshot.

Thank you.
