I am using Workstation 6.5.4 and I am trying to upgrade to Workstation 6.5.5, however as part of the upgrade Workstation 6.5.4 is removed before 6.5.5 can be installed.
As Workstation 6.5.4 is being removed I get the following error message:
"Service VMware Agent Service could not be stopped. Verift that you have sufficient privileges to install system services".
I tried to repair the Workstation 6.5.4 installation, however now I get the following error message:
"Service VMware Agent Service could not be installed. Verift that you have sufficient privileges to install system services".
I am running Windows XP on a Lenovo T60 machine, any advice would be very welcome!!!!

Lee.
Had same issue. error 1922.
In my case McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention was causing this problem. Disabled it and was able to uninstall VM Ware.
Good Luck.
Hi Lee,
The first think to try in this case is a simple reboot of the machine. If the service is still present, uninstall it manually. Then try to install the new Workstation package.
Good luck.

Franck
PS: thanks for the nice colors. :smileycool:
Hi Franck
I've re-booted and tried again, I've also tried a complete uninstall using the Workstation executable and selecting the Uninstall option, however I still get the same message:
"Error 1922. Service VMware Agent Service (ufad-ws60) could not be deleted. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to remove system services."
I am logged in as an Administrator, I'v also tried "right clicking" the executable and selecting "Run As..." to make sure.
Thanks for the comment about the colours - I think it makes it easier to see which are the error messages. ![]()

Can you try to delete the service manually?
Open a command line and run:

Hi André
I have run the commands and here is the output I get:

Not sure what is wrong on your system or why the permission is denied.
Do you have any AV or firewall apps running which might prevent you from accessing the service!?
You could try to verify (or change) the permissions for the service in the registry.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ufad-ws60]
André
Hi André
Would you happen to know what the correct Registry settings should be?
Regards
Lee.
Since you are going to delete the service, all you need is to give the local "Administrators" group full access to this key and its sub entries/keys. Depending on the current state you may need to take ownership on this key prior to be able to modify the permissions.
Usually the permissions are inherited. Administrators and System with full access, Users with read access and CREATOR-OWNER with special permissions.
André
Hi André
I've checked the permissions and I have full Administrator access for all the keys but when I try to delete from the command line I still get "Access is denied".
It is though the system is saying I've got admin rights but won't actually allow me to use then!
Even more confused....
Lee.
Just a quick question.
Is this a standalone PC or is it part of a domain? In case of a domain, verify that the group policies allow you to access the services.
André
Hi André
The laptop is part of a domain.
However if I select:
Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Local Security Policy>> Software Restriction Policy
There is no policy configured.

Disabling McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention resolved the problem!
Once it was disabled I was able to upgrade to Workstation 6.5.5.
Thanks for your help!

Excellent, this answer fixed my problem as well, in order to uninstall VMWare workstation 7 on/from Windows 7.
I uninstalled VMware vCenter Converter and tried to re-install in and the got the error. To fix it just reboot the computer.
