Editting .vmx file cause corruption

I am trying to edit the .vmx file of a VM that is shut-down and have run into a problem.  Any change I make to the .vmx files causes the VM not to load with an error that states that the catalog file is corrupt.  Is there a particular editor that needs to be used?

The Virtual Machine needs to be shut down, not suspended, and if VMware Workstation is not closed then at least the Tab for the Virtual Machine must be close.  Any text editor that saves in plain ASCII text is fine.
