Hi,
I've been using Workstation for a few years on windows without problems.
I've tried Workstation 7 on Ubuntu 10 and somehow I am really disappointed. I am not sure what is wrong... it is really supported? or this is kind of "joke release" for Ubuntu users?
I am paying for the software and I would also require it to work!!!
1) Guest system is Windows XP. Sometimes after start it is impossible to click on start menu. Sometimes it is loosing focus... come on - it is not possible to work with that!
2) on large network load connection breaks and DNS stops responding. This happens in NAT mode
Now my question: Does some know if there is plan to seriously support Ubuntu? It works fine on windows, ESX or Mac....
Regards,
Maciej
Hello and welcome to the forums.
Are you using Workstation 7.0 or 7.1? 7.1 was the first release to officially support Ubuntu 10.04.
Good Luck!
Hi,
VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.0-261024.x86_64.bundle
I am forced to work under Windows, because Workstation works there just fantastic. However I would like to switch to Ubuntu, this is only possible if I can have reliable Workstation installation......
I would expect VMWare team to test their software a bit better. I have first problems like two hours after I've installed it. The question is: was it really tested?
I've just read relase notes from 6.x - it does support ubuntu as well.. great, because 6.5 does not even install on ubuntu (hangs during configuration).
I would say, that ubuntu is being ignored and not well tested...
Regarding http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php , yes. Workstation 7.0.1

Hi,
definitely Ubuntu 10.04 is supported as host in Workstation 7.1.
In my personal laptop i'm running Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64 and Workstation 7.1:
jet@bebop:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS \n \l
jet@bebop:~$ uname -a
Linux bebop 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:20:59 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
jet@bebop:~$ vmware -v
VMware Workstation 7.1.0 build-261024
And Workstation is working flawless, like a charm. I promise you

okay... I've completly reinstalled ubuntu and workstation - now it works just perfect. There are two things that could cause my problems:
1) I've tried to install Workstation 6.5 and de-installed it. At least it has removed all network interfaces....
2) I've deactivated auth demon because it is using CPU also when workstation is not enabld.
Anyway - clean install seams to be working just fing !!!! That would be so cool
I will test it for a few next days and post the result.
This is my system:
miklasm@miklasmub:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS \n \l
miklasmub:/home/miklasm# uname -a
Linux miklasmub 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:20:59 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
miklasmub:/home/miklasm# vmware -v
VMware Workstation 7.1.0 build-261024
Hi,
remember make feedback if you have (or not) any problem running Workstation 7.1 on Ubuntu 10.04. You shouldn't have any problem.
Anyway, if you have any, let us know.
Just another thing, remember to mark any helpful or correct answer. This is the way to award vmware communities users that help others

I have still problems with network in NAT - testcase: copy 10.000 small java files over network.
1) copying those files from Windows XP (guest) to Ubuntu SMB share (Workstation host) works just fine - this is probably using loopback
2) copying those files over network to FTP server causes problems. Network breaks and I am getting messages "host not found". After restarting vmware services on ubuntu everything works fine, and when I start copy process it breaks again.
I am suspecting that DNS server dies, because IP connections are working (skype is online for example).
Is there workaround for this?
Hi,
just remember to install the vmware tools in the guest.
You can try to configure the vcard in the guest as bridge instead NAT. Maybe this helps
Remember to configure it in a DHCP or static way.

The network problem should be common - I have made clean install without any modifications....
I have no problems with DHCP but DNS - my post was wrong.
ok - it is supported, but I have still problems with DNS.... I will open another topic
I had 7.1.0 installed and working perfectly on Ubuntu (2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 19 01:38:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux). Then I let the Workstation interface update me to 7.1.1 with disastrous effects. I did an uninstall and reinstall of my original 7.1.0 bundle but I get the same error messages (std-error output from running manually, because I keep seeing kernel errors and I want to make sure I can sudo):. The gui doesn't work either. The logs are empty.

Basically, I know that my kernel is not configured properly. But vmware-config.pl is GONE! And I don't know how to get it back. Any quick suggestions?
Thanks
