I have been using VMWare Workstation 12.1.1 build-3770994 on a Ubuntu 16.04 host since it was released, initially as an upgrade to 15.10 then as a clean install on my system. The only issues I have experienced thus far is when the kernel is updated & it then needs to rebuild some of the components otherwise works perfectly... even utilise it for my work VM's so I only have one machine for all purposes.
Hence shouldn't be an issue running it albeit unsupported in that environment.
