Did i mess up today when i upgraded my virtual windows 7 to windows 10?

My virtual machine was windows 7. Today i upgraded it to windows 10 at microsoft website. Iam non-commerical and new at using a virtual machine. At the top of this window it still says windows 7 64-bit vmware workstation 12 player. Also, my screen display for windows 10 is much smaller. Can you tell me what do i need to do? Thank you so much.

This can and needs to be manually changed by the "owner or user" of the vm.  You can change it within Workstation/Player and, if you want all the names in sync at all places, change names for the folder and all related vmdk files representing the vm.  (So no, these names don't necessarily tell what the vm really is.)  You can find instructions in posts at this forum on this subject and may want to make a copy of the vm folder, in case you made a mistake.

This can be because of one or a combination of several "issues".  For one thing, when I use Player, sometimes the screen of the vm doesn't necessarily cover the whole "window or view" of the Player.  But, it'll be fine/auto-adjusted after I maximize/minimize/maximize the Player's window.  If this doesn't help, you can try to (re-)install VMware Tools and/or check resolutions for both host and guest(vm) and/or your video card.  Others like me can only guess right now because we don't have any specific information, e.g. a screenshot.

When I upgraded my VMs from Win7 to Win10 last year, I can remember I had to do 2 things. (This was on a Mac, using VMWare Fusion, but may be relevant anyway.)

  1. My VMs were setup with scsi disks, and that crashed. So I changed them to sata, and then the upgrade worked. I think I selected it on the settings page of the VM.
  2. I had to uninstall and then install VMWare Tools. It was not enough to just tell it to reinstall. I had to first uninstall manually. I got that tip from the forums, I think.

Hope this helps.

gimmely,

Your reply was really helpful.  I finally got a full screen display, which is critical for my business (which I've had to rebuild) on the computer.

Many weeks now of discouragement- your reaching out to help me hit the spot big-time!  Cannot thank you enough.
