Is it possible to deploy SQL Server 2008 Enterprise (64-bit) on virtual machine (using vmware workstation 😎 running windows server 2003 as guest OS?
Since, Miicrosoft says 'SQL Server 2008 is supported in virtual machine environments running on the Hyper-V role in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter editions.'
If required please refer to following link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(SQL.100).aspx
Appreciate your help!
For testing you can use the Windows 2008 R2 trial version. Runs for 180 days. I don't recall that you can actually have a Windows 2003 64 biit version as a trial. So I do all my testing with the latest trials from Microsoft (Windows 2008 R2 Server, Windows 7 as well as the server application).
According to Microsoft you need this versions as the guest OS:
Windows Server 2003 SP2 64-bit x64 Datacenter Windows Server 2003 SP2 64-bit x64 Enterprise Windows Server 2003 SP2 64-bit x64 Standard Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 64-bit x64 Datacenter Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 64-bit x64 Enterprise Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 64-bit x64 Standard Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Datacenter without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Enterprise, Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Enterprise without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Standard Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Standard without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit x64 Web Windows 2008 R2 64-bit x64 Datacenter Windows 2008 R2 64-bit x64 Enterprise Windows 2008 R2 64-bit x64 Standard Windows 2008 R2 64-bit x64 Web Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 for Windows Essential Server Solutions |
I would however use 2008R2 because it's the latest WIN kernel and uses 64 bit. But be aware that Standard can only address 32 GB RAM. According to some 8.0.1 seems to have problems with lots of RAM on the host. Maybe some others will give more information.
Is it for testing or production usage?
Thanks a lot for your reply Brend. This is for testing purpose.
