I’m in the process of purchasing a Dell M6500 laptop with the following applicable specifications:
• Intel® Core™ i7-920XM Extreme Edition 2.00GHz 8MB
• 16.0GB, DDR3-1333Mhz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
Purpose: Install Vmware Workstation to be used for testing of applications and architectures. The guest VMs are expected to range from Windows XP workstation (32-Bit), Linux (32/64-Bit) and MS Windows 2008 Server (64-Bit). The proposed host operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit.
Questions:
1. Has anyone used this system and specifications above (processor/memory/host OS)? Any feedback?
2. Memory – I’m able to configure the system with either (8GB) of 1600Mhz taking up 4DIMMS and all four available slots or 16.0GB 1333Mhz taking up all four slots. My experience has been Vmware is memory intensive so I thought of opting for slower 16GB vs faster 8GB due to the fact Dell consumes all four available slots when configuring faster memory (1600Mhz) thus impacting ease of upgrading later to 16GB. Thoughts?
