Deleting snapshots failed to clean up

Tried to delete some snapshots since I am running low on disk space. Got messages indicating that it failed to clean up the disk file. However, those snapshots that I tried to delete do not show up in the snapshot manager anymore. But I've got multiple snapshot disk files left, *.000001.wmdk, *.000003.vmdk, and *.000005.vmdk. I want to delete these vmdk files since they are about 2-3GB each, and I can't revert to them anyway as they are not listed by the snapshot manager as

Following the discussion in a thread with similar topic. I did the following:

1. first check that neither *3.vmdk nor *5.vmdk are not mentioned in .vmx file, as one of posters suggested in the thread.

2. renamed *.000003.vmdk, and *.000005.vmdk to *.000003.vmdk.sav, and *.000005.vmdk.sav

However, when I tried to restart my VM, I've got a message indicating that it needs those.vmdk files I renamed to power on.

So I guess the vmdk files are still attached to the VM. Is there a way to savely delete these snapshot vmdk files. I can free up close to 12G if I can delete them.

Try taking a new snapshot and then deleting the new snapshot.
