Convert Linked Clone to standalone VM

I have 3 VMs which are Linked Clones: Machine3 linked Clone of Machine 2 which is a linked clone of Machine1

Each one of these VMs now have a number of subsiqent snapshots (One on each of Machine 1 & 2 which is the clone point)

• Machine 1 -> Snapshot 1 (Clone to Machine 2 ) -> Snapshot 2 -> Snapshot 3 -> Snapshot 4

• Machine 2 -> Snapshot 1 (Clone to Machine 3) -> Snapshot 2 -> Snapshot 3
  -> Snapshot 4

• Machine 3 -> Snapshot 1 -> Snapshot 2 -> Snapshot 3

Is there a way of removing the 'linked' nature of these so that they are 100% independant VMs. I don't mind loosing the snapshot from the main machine at the point it was clone.I want to try and end up with something like

• Machine 1 -> Snapshot 1 -> Snapshot 2
  -> Snapshot 3

• Machine 2 -> Snapshot 1 -> Snapshot 2 -> Snapshot 3

• Machine 3 -> Snapshot 1 -> Snapshot 2
  -> Snapshot 3

From the clone go through the clone wizard again and choose to create another clone, type "Full".

Unfortunately this does not appear to copy the snapshots

you want to copy the snapshots ?

that is not possible without significant manual work - such a procedure would need several manual edits of config-files and vmdks

Are you sure that you really need to keep all the snapshots ?

Yes I want all the snapshots. They are various stages of an MSCS configuration for demo purposes so I need to keep them but the cloneing means its much harder to move them around independantly.

Time to see if I can hack it then.If its based off one of the original disk images then hopefully copying that locally and then updating the config scripts might get me somewhere.

First step would be to copy all vmdks used by that clone into a new directory

then you would have to check the parentFileNameHint parameter of every vmdk that is involved

that is not trivial if you used one-piece growing disks

anyway - I can help you on the road if you run into problems

Cheers - managed to get the first cloned all sorted and it now just uses a copy in a subdirectory.

For some reason the 2nd Clone keeps saying it can't find the parent to the disk even though i did it exactly the same way and it all looks like it lines up.

Its where its looking for the parent disk. On startup it says

If I point the parent for the disk to the clone it works fine, its when i switch it to my new copy in the cloned dir it doesn't seem to find it.

Thanks for the request - aftering looking at what you requested I realised my mistake. I had copied the disk files from the snapshot (Windows Server 2008-cl1-000001.vmdk) rather than the parent (Windows Server 2008-cl1.vmdk)

I copied the right files over and bingo.
