It took me ages to work this out... I found the control key in Workstation 12 guests would keep getting stuck on (bouncing it a few times freed it up, but after a short while it would usually get stuck again). This led to lots of fun with unexpected multi-selects, big cursor jumps, etc. Eventually I tracked this down to having the Clipà.Vu clipboard utility (which by default overloads the control key quite a bit) installed on my Windows host. My solution was to uninstall it. The problem was there with and without the enhanced keyboard driver.
It's unlikely, but posted in case it helps someone, someday.

Thanks for your troubleshooting efforts, and in particular thanks for posting back here with the results. That's just the sort of interoperability issue that can be a nightmare to understand and solve, and your post will certainly prove helpful to anyone else with the same particular combination of software.
Much appreciated!
Cheers,

Hello John and other VMWare users,
Here is Jan, creator of Clipa.Vu. I confirm I received a message from John describing the problem and I am thankful I got informed as the first one. I replied immediately with a promise I will try to fix the problem and some additional questions how to reproduce the problem. I have not received any reply to those questions yet. John, please to share with me as much info as necessary on support@clipa.vu address where we started our communication and once it is fixed (and I will try my max to achieve that), we can announce it here. Thanks a lot for your cooperation.
Have a nice Easter all of you!
Jan
Awesome! Welcome to the VMware Communities, Jan! :smileycool:
Have you been able to download and install VMware Workstation Pro or Workstation Player? Even though it was reported with VMware Workstation Pro, I think the problem will most likely occur with Workstation Player as well, which might be easier to start with. You can download VMware Workstation Player here.
Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried to reproduce the problem here. (I mostly use Linux and macOS, personally.)
Disclaimer 2: VMware Workstation and Player do some very unusual things with the keyboard modifier keys, so there might be some blame on VMware's part, or it might simply be that Clipa.Vu and VMware Workstation/Player just do things that Windows could handle separately but cannot handle the two applications at the same time!
Let me know if I can help with any further information from the VMware side and I'll see what I can do to assist.
Thanks,

Unfortunately Jan's e-mail arrived in the middle of 14 low-priority ones that turned up that morning and I missed it at the time (as I was late so just scanned them very briefly, turns out there's an invite to a free wine tasting there too). I have since replied but am a little annoyed with myself for holding him up. Yes the problem exists with Workstation Player (for a lot of years the day job was designing computer hardware, mostly x86 stuff and graphic cards, I'm not short of kit, just free space to put stuff).
