Completely unable to uninstall VMware WS from Linux host

Host:  openSUSE 11.4  x64 WS verstion  7.1.3 for Linux

I tried to update WS 7.1.3 to VMware WS 7.1.4  from inside the program.  All the VMware tools   and the program downloaded.  The upgrade  failed because the installer complained it could not lock the mouse for authenication.  "Try again" did not work - had to close the WS program.

Downloaded the standalone version of of 7.1.4.  Tried to install   that  because the installer should have  removed the previous version.  Uninstall failed and locked up the machine forcing a reboot.  Tried to uninstall  7.1.3 using vmware-installer -u vmware-workstation - failed and required a reboot of Linux.

Followed instructions in KB 1306 about  how to recover from a failed uninstall from Linux host.

First  step - login as su then run /etc/init.d/vmware stop.  Command would not  execute because it said there was an instance of VMware Player running (shouln't this command have stopped it?!).   Ran ps -A and killed the vmware processes that still were  running.  Ran lsmod | grep vm and it displayed some processes as [permanent].  Could not  kill them even after reboot.  Tried to  continue with the instructions  by mv* moduels to /tmp.   That    was  OK (no error msg)

Then  ran rmmod vmnet.o

Returned

ERROR: Module vmnet is in use by [permanent]

Any suggestgions on how to remove the program and install ver 7.1.4 - short of reinstalling the OS.?

KB 1306 is: NOT_IMPLEMENTED Errors in Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 virtual machines on ESX Server 2.0 a...

I would follow the instructions in KB 38, Manually uninstalling VMware Workstation from Linux hosts and if necessary delete the files while booted with a Linux Live CD/DVD/ISO Image if they can't be deleted when booting the physical install.
