Hi,
I had VMWare Workstation 6.0xx in use, everything works fine. Now i did the Update to 6.5, i can not open VMs or create VMs. When i finished the Create-Wizard, the .vmx is finally generated an on my HDD. But i can´t open this .vmx, i select it Open->VM, then happens nothing. I see only the main-window...
Now i have downgraded to VMWare Workstaton 6.0xx and i am able to generate VMs again...
Is that a known Problem? I got no error-message in VM 6.5 but it doesnt work...
Hope someone can help me...
Can you tell us some more about your environment such as the host operating system? What happens if Workstation is not running and you double click on a .vmx file from explorer? If a Windows host, is there anything relevant in the host's event logs or the VMware log files that Workstation puts in the user's profile?
I have the same problem with VMware 6.5.0 workstation. It created a ...-flat.vmdk file of 8GB size but I don't think it installed the OS (Win XP as guest) and I cannot start the guest. When I double click the .vmx file, it brings up the workstation software but nothing else happens. Same when I try to open the file from within the ws. Sometimes it seems to do stuff on my HDD and sometimes it creates a .vmx.lck folder that contains a lock file, but it does nothing visible in the ws. The "vm" and "team" menus are completely blank and the guest OS does not show up on the sidebar (It did when I tried for the first time). I see no related errors in the Windows event log.
I already tried reinstalling vmware and the guest OS but nothing changes (it only got worse because it's not showing the guest on the sidebar anymore). My host is Vista 64bit Business with 4GB ram.
thx for your answers...
Host = XP-Pro-SP3, Guest = Ubuntu8.04+XP-Pro
my bug is exactly same like @Enrico777, nothing appears in VM-Ware-Window. When i douppleklick the .vmx the default VM-Ware-WS Screen appears only, not more...
Can you upload a screenshot and your UI log (the location of the UI log is given in the About dialog)?
You could please upload a screenshot anyway?
Also:
1. Can you verify that the VMware Authorization Service (vmware-authd.exe) is running?
2. When you launch VMware Workstation normally (not by double-clicking on a .vmx file), do you see a Home tab?
3. Could you try removing your Documents and Settings\yourUserName\Application Data\VMware\preferences.ini file?
You could please upload a screenshot anyway?
There you go.
1. Can you verify that the VMware Authorization Service (vmware-authd.exe) is running?
Yes, as seen on the screenshot.
2. When you launch VMware Workstation normally (not by double-clicking on a .vmx file), do you see a Home tab?
Yes.
3. Could you try removing your Documents and Settings\yourUserName\Application Data\VMware\preferences.ini file?
I have Vista 64 bit Business. The file was in C:\Users\minime\AppData\Roaming\VMware. I deleted it and also deleted the newly created lock folder. The vmx file still won't open. Nothing changed.
I almost forgot a thing that seems quite important in retrospective: When I try to close vmware, after trying to access the vmx, the program doesn't respond and an error occurs (second screenshot). For your convenience I've included the files mentioned on that error message in a zip.
Cheers!
Enrico
The services are all running, I can´t open in VMPlayer (6.0 + 6.5), but in Workstation 6.0 all works (but not in player); I see the home-tab... The screenshot is the same postet from enrico777, but i have no error.
I cant open in VMPlayer (6.0), but Workstatio 6.0 works, perhaps there is a relationship?
VMWorkstation 6.0 >> works
VMPlayer 6.0 >> not working
VMWorkstation 6.5 >> works
VMPlayer 6.5 >> not working
VMWorkstation 6.5 >> works
The workstation 6.5 works for you?
For me, the player 6.5 opens the vmx, but it doesn't find the OS - as I expected it obviously hadn't been installed by the workstation.
Analyzing your stack trace shows the fault occurring in msvcp80.dll. It could well be that the calls in the library are being given bad data so it is not at fault as such but it is worth checking it out, particularly as this dll is part of the Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable which other threads reference as causing problems. Looking at my Workstation 6.5 install, albeit on Vista, it includes this dll in the Resources folder but it is a different version from most of the other copies on my system. This can be legitimate, due to side by side (a feature meant to reduce dll hell), but given that things aren't working very well, it's probably worth a shot.
I'd uninstall whatever version of the C++ runtime you have and then install either or both of these:
May also be worth temporarily moving/renaming the VMware provided one.
My system is showing as two installed but doesn't show different descriptions so presumably one is SP1 and the other SP0.
Dump analysis also attached lest anyone can glean anything else from it.
Hi, i had this same problem for days now, searching for solutions without help, until i decided to uninstall software from my pc that might potentionaly block vmware in some case
I uninstalled some firewall i had and few other things related to security, after reboot guess what, i can create VM!
Even i had my firewall disabled i think it still conflicted with vm, so go check ur programs in control panel and uninstall anything suspicious that you think might block this, reboot and try again, GL
Thanks for your responses! I will look into it next week, since I will be away until sunday.
Cheers!
Sorry, I didn't reply for quite a while. I was busy with work and other stuff and the VMWare project does not have my highest priority.
Anyway ... Guess what! It works!
The story: Today I decided to uninstall Avira AntiVir Personal, because the daily commercial mesages bothered me.
I switched to COMMODO Internet Security, because I was enjoying their firewall already and now they offer a free VirusScan too. After the installation had finished and my computer restarted, I noticed the VMWare icon in the system tray (which was obviously not there when I ran Avira). I fired up VMWare and now it all works fine!
Thanks again for your assistance!
Cheers!

Bummer that you had this problem for so long... I remember seeing Avira mentioned in the release notes for 6.5:
http://www.vmware.com/support/ws65/doc/releasenotes_ws65.html#knownissues
"...If you use Avira AntiVir antivirus software on a Windows Vista host, you might have problems running virtual machines..."
but then again I see that you were running XP as your Host -- perhaps the Release Notes should be updated to include the Windows XP/Avira problem you experienced.
Glad things are working for you now!
