Can't install Workstation 10

I am trying to install Workstation 10 with no success. I run the installer, the UAC prompt pops up, I click OK, and then nothing else happens. I have looked in my Temp folder, and a few files have been uncompressed to it, but only a handful.......there is no workstation installer, just a few HTM files, a couple of png files, a couple of pkg files and a lua file. It also creates a vmsetup log file (contents below) I have previously had Workstation 9 running OK for quite a few months. I have tried everything I can think of to get this installer to run, but nothing works. Things I have tried are :

Run as administrator

Follow the VMWare article telling which files and reg keys to delete after a failed installation

Uninstall version 9

Reboot 1000 times

Sacrifice a goat

Upgrade my Windows 8 to 8.1

Create a new user account, make it an admin account and run the installer under that account

Uninstall all my Stardock software ( I read somewhere that it can sometimes cause installers to misfire)

Download the installer again just in case it was corrupt (this part is particularly annoying as I have a very small monthly download limit)

The really annoying thing is that now version 9 won't install either. I have been tearing my hair out over this for 2 days now, and I'm just about ready to write off my $120 upgrade fee and start using VBox (well, not really, but that's just an indication of how my frustration is growing). I have ut in a support ticket, but haven't had a reply yet, but I suppose it is probably the weekend in America.

If anyone can offer some suggestions I would be most grateful.

You will never know if workstation 9 is fully uninstalled. Why don't yo try this?

Install it using command line

VMware-workstation-full-10.0.0-1295980.exe /clean

Thanks, but still no luck. Almost exactly the same result......it seems that each time I try the setup, it uncompresses a different number of files into my temp folder....sometimes there's 5, sometimes 7 and sometimes 9. I have verified the MD5 of the file downloaded, so it hasn't been corrupted. I have also tried running it from the command line with the /e switch, but rather than getting an unpacked executable, I just get eactly the same installer exe file again....?

I should have mentioned in my previous post, immediately after sacrificing the goat, I disabled my firewall and my antivirus as well

I'm starting to think that the installer may be terminally broken.....I just tried running it on a Windows 7 box, and got almost the same result.....although this time it didn't even decompress itself to my temp folder......it just did nothing. Like I said, I verified the MD5, so I assume that means the file wasn't corrupted during download.....I don't know where this leaves me - obviously I don't want to have to download the file AGAIN, and from what I have seen, there would be little point anyway - neither of the downloads I have done so far has given me a working installation file. This is starting to leave a very bad (and decidedly anti-vmware) taste in my mouth.

Problem solved.......format C drive, reinstall Windows 8, install Workstation before anything else.....

So it was something from the previous version that was creating the problem. Now that it installed it means the installer was alright.

Anyway glad to know you found a fix.

Please close the thread by choosing correct/helpful answer so people can refer to it in future Smiley Happy

Hello, Have you tried some registry cleaner software after uninstalling? Try CCleaner. Hope will help.

@OscarDavey Did you even read the thread before posting?  GerryL already stated, "Problem solved.......format C drive, reinstall Windows 8, install Workstation before anything else....." so there is nothing at this point to use CCleaner on! Smiley Wink

Same issue here. I've got a fresh Windows 8.1 x64 installation and tried to install VMware Workstation 10.0.3 and it's the same behaviour GerryL described, including the goat thing. Can anybody help me on this? Thanks!

I had the exact same problem and solved it by renaming the installer file to "buggy.exe". Any name would probably do but I found it appropriate.

Wow really... that worked for me. Thanks kallehakan.
