Can't install Ubuntu 8.10 on Vista x64

I have not been successful at installing Ubuntu 8.10 desktop(32 bit) and Ubuntu 8.10 enterprise (32 bit). Host is an dell studio Intel I7 940 Vista Ultimate 64 bit and Workstation 6.5.1 build 126130. I appreciate any help or work arounds anyone might have. I submitted this to Vmware Support a week ago but they haven't responded with any suggestions...

When installing 32 bit Ubuntu 8.10 desktop from iso, the VM consistantly crashes very early into the install with a core dump and SUSE hangs early in the install. The host device manager does not show any conflicts. I have tried running VMware Workstation as adminstrator but it makes no difference.

Here's an excerpt from the end of the log:

With me it crashes very quickly after I type 'cli' on the minimal install iso. I also have an i7 machine, but I'm using VMWare Server 2.0.

I have a windows XP 32 bit running ok (but that was migrated from Parallel to Fusion then to VMWare Server).

I will try to grab another 32 but linux and see if that works.

I have installed the x64 bit version of Ubuntu 8.10 on a Vista x64 host just fine.

I would make sure your BIOS settings in relation to your CPU Instructions are correct.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

However, the original question, and my response, were specifically about 32 bit versions of Ubuntu. 64 bit versions are installing and working fine.

Since my previous post, I have tried to install open SUSE 11.1 (that failed too) and Debian 5. Debian 5 worked ok. Given the Debian roots of Ubuntu, perhaps that is a suitable alternative for the original poster.

I also got Ubuntu 8.10 server 32 bit to install without any problems.
