Can't copy-paste in Window mode

Following is a bug I can reproduce everytime (strange enough only when using WinRAR, but other programs may be harmed by that bug, too):

Trying to copy a password from host OS (Windows 7/64) to guest OS (Windows Server 2012), the password always gets scrambled when doing this in Window mode:

  1. In the host OS, enter a text, containing a hyphen, into Notepad:

  2. Select the text:
    Unbenannt-2.png

  3. Copy the selected text to the clipboard:
    Unbenannt-3.png

  4. Start WinRAR in the guest OS and select "Add to Archive ...":
    Unbenannt-4.png

  5. Go to the Advanced tab and hit Select Password button:
    Unbenannt-5.png

  6. Paste the text from the clipboard into the Password text field (make sure to have the Show Password option checked):
    Unbenannt-6.png

  7. You will notice that the hyphen has changed into some other character, in this case it's the "ß":

VMware - please fix.

Do you have Tools installed in the guest?  How are you pasting that text?  Are you using Workstation's Edit→Paste command, or a Paste command in the guest itself?

Thanks for trying to help.

I'm usually using the keyboard's <CTRL>+<C> in the host and <CTRL>+<V> in the guest OS.

I asked about Tools because in Workstation 10, we added the ability to paste into any VM, even if Tools are not installed.  This new feature simulates key strokes in the guest, but that happens at the hardware level, because Workstation doesn't know what keyboard layout the guest is using.  Since the minus key in the US English layout is in the same place as ß in the German layout, I think that you're invoking this new feature.

To be sure, could you try these two tests:

1. Copy "a-b" on the host.

2. Click in the VM so that the VM grabs input.

3. Press Ctrl+V in WinRar.

1. Make WinRar the active window in the VM.

2. Copy "a-b" on the host.

3. In the Workstation menu, click Edit→Paste.

Let me know what letters get pasted in each test.  Thanks!

I'm sorry, I must have overlooked your question about Tools. Yes, VMware Tools are installed. I always install them because I regularly use the drag & drop feature.

Regarding your last question: Both tests show the same result: "aßb".

Here's another strange observation: After pasting above string into WinRAR, pressing any key on the keyboard and hitting <CTRL>+<V> again pastes the correct string:

Thanks for trying that for me.  I can't explain why you get the wrong text, even when Tools are installed, but I'll enter a bug into our system so it gets investigated.

Hello,

Did this situation true only for WinRAR?

Or true for all applications, that have password field?

If for all, try this:

Shut Down Guest OS

Open Settings=>Options=>Guest Isolation

Check "Enable copy and paste" and submit.

Or uncheck and then check.

Hope will help.

Yours, Oscar
