Can't connect to FTP server that is running on VM from external PC

I run VMware workstation v10 on a windows 7 pro PC

On a VM I run a Windows server 2008 r2 machine and enabled FTP server

From the host OS I can conect to the FTP server.

I can not connect to that FTP server from an external Win XP PC.

However I was able to join the domain for wich the 2008 server is the DC, so the network does not appear to be the problem, I can also map a drive to the server.

Has anyone any suggestions please?

What's the connection type of the Windows server 2008 r2 VM ?  Bridge or NAT?

I use a bridged connection.

I have since tried another VM ((Server2003) and it behaves the same.

I can also connect to a FTP server on the host machine.
