Can't boot Win98: error inintializing device VMCPD

After I installed Workstation version 6.0.0 build-45731, I get the following message when trying to boot Windows 98 virtual machines:

"While initializing device VMCPD

Windows Protection Error. You will need to reboot your computer. Press any key...."

This occurs with machines I created under Workstation version 5.5 and also when trying to install Win98 on Workstation 6.0.

I am running SuSE version 9.3. with recent kernel.

How can I fix this problem?

I am also getting the VMCPD error on a Win98 VM. Built the image on VMServer 1.0.1 on a WinXP box. Copied image to Win2003 Server box running VMPlayer 2.0.0 build-45731. Runs fine under VMServer but crashes on VMPlayer.

Suggestions?

Thanks

I have since learned that by dropping back to version 1.x of VMPlayer, the Win98 VM works. So, it appears to be a VMPlayer 2.x issue.

I have USB on my Win 98SE, albeit on an XP host with Player 1.x. I sometimes transfer files using a USB stick to and from the 98. Maybe you should post your .vmx so some of the gurus can peruse it. I never had an issue under Workstation 5.x either.

Regards!
