Can VMware Workstation control guest CPU clock speed?

Hi VMware Workstation Users,

I have a unique case to solve that requires controlling the CPU clock speed in the guest. Specifically, I need to slow down a 1.5MHz processor to less than 500MHz. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance,

-t

Slow down a 1.5MHz processor? Woww  Yeh yeh ok a typo i understand it is 1.5GHz.

Can you tell us what you are trying to achieve? Maybe there's another solution for your problem.

Virtualization means the guest runs directly on the processor most of the time - causing it to run at full speed. Workstation doesn't have any mechanism to make a processor run slower.

Hi Wil,

Opps, yes major typo... my bad. I have some legacy software that crashes w/CPU clock speed >500MHz. I have been running this software on a 200MHz laptop for years... thought VM technology might be a better solution Smiley Happy

Thanks for the points, did i deserve them?

Well is right of course, you cannot do this in VMware Workstation.

But do note that detail... while you cannot do this in VMware Workstation, you can actually do something very close to this in VMware ESX/ESXi

Youc an set limits on the CPU speed in the resources tab of your VMs configuration and down there you can set for example a limit on 100MHz.
