Can I permanently attach a specific keyboard and mouse to a VMware guest on startup?

I've followed the instructions to attach a specific USB keyboard/mouse to VMware Workstation.

Instructions are here: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=10334....

This means that when I press a key on one keyboard it goes to the guest, and when I press a key on the other keyboard it goes to the host, and same with the mouse. That all works fine.

The downside is that every time I start up the VM, I have to manually re-attach the keyboard/mouse via the VM > Removable Devices menu.

Does anyone know if there is a way to permanently attach the device to the guest such that it will automatically connect the removable device when powering on the VM, e.g. by specifying the name of the device in the vmx file?  Certainly seems like there should be...
