Can I Rename VM Files?

I have a Windows 10 VM that started as Windows 8.1.  After upgrading, it is now Windows 10

Five files for this VM where the files reside have the following names:

Windows 8_1 x64.nvram

Windows 8_1 x64.vmdk

Windows 8_1 x64.vmsd

Windows 8_1 x64.vmx

Windows 8_1 x64.vmxf

Am I able to safely rename these files above with the VMs continuing to function correctly?

I would prefer the following names:

Windows 10 x64.nvram

Windows 10 x64.vmdk

Windows 10 x64.vmsd

Windows 10 x64.vmx

Windows 10 x64.vmxf

Thanks.

I am seeing no way to do this natively through VMWare Workstation, so I got the desired outcome though a multi step process:

  1. I used Macrium Reflect to take a full image of Windows 10 VM
  2. I deleting the VM after backup
  3. I created an identically configured VM with the correct name without installing any OS
  4. I used Macrium's bootable recovery CD to restore the backup image over the new VM.

This did the trick, and all files now have the name I want.
