Bridged mode - Guest not pulling IP

Host = Vista, DHCP

Guest = XP or Vista

Vmware Workstation 6.51

Scenario: Vista as a host and Vista pop3-server on the guest. I want to be able to contact the guest to use the pop-3 server from a different node

The guest isn't pulling an IP. I goes from 0.0.0.0 to the non-routable 169.x.x.x.

Is there something I need to do on the host app? I'm using default settings and just switching the guest from NAT to Bridged.

I can provide more information as needed

Thank You,

Sean

I assume you use a bridged vNIC, now, so the guest should get a DHCP address from the same DHCP server the host get its address from.

  • What kind of DHCP server is it? Do you use one integrated in a DSL modem? Are there enough addresses free/available? Any restrictions applied (MAC address,...)

  • Assign the guest a valid static IP address and see if you can communicate at all (ping the host, ping the DHCP server).

  • Check that the bridged vNIC (= VMnet0) is bridged to the correct physical NIC. Is this a wireless one?
