Host is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
Have Workstation 6.5.3. Ran
Workstation 7 install (the full version). Prompted to uninstall 6.5.3.
Then restarted. During install, got a 2203 error on some unix tools.
Install proceeded to complete. Reran Workstation 7 install (this time
use the run as administrator option, obviously I am already an
administrator) and chose repair. Got a blue screen. Restarted machine.
Lost keyboard. Could not login. Issue same as
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/242401;jsessionid=25AB81AD07A1428B246E60B6BA218BAC?tstart=15.
Rebooted
machine using Windows 7 disc and repaired machine by restoring to a
previous system restore point. Ran program Workstation 6.5.3. Got an
error. (So the system restore was not able to restore everything, I
guess.) Ran Workstation 6.5.3 install and chose repair option. Got
BSOD. Restarted machine. Lost keyboard.
Rebooted machine using
Windows 7 disc and repaired machine by restoring to a previous system
restore point. Uninstalled Workstation 6.5.3. Restarted machine. Ran
Workstation 6.5.3 install. Got BSOD. I didn't copy down the BSOD
previously but this time it says page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.
Restored
machine using Acronis True Image. Now I am afraid to touch my existing
working Workstation 6.5.3 installation. Please advise. Thanks.
I wonder if it has anything to do with Acronis True Image 2010. The version I have seems to have a BSOD bug as stated in http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/support/updates/changes.html?p=6652. The latest version fixes this bug - "Fixed BSOD on some computers after inserting a flash drive". It does not seem to be related but with the USB drivers installing during the installation, who knows. But why would I lose my keyboard after BSOD and reboot ?
I just upgraded to the latest version of Acronis but am still afraid to touch my working workstation 6.5.3.
Strange, I suppose I should update my Acronis as I have the RTM of 2010. Also, System Restore only recovers various areas of the installation, but not all of it; it isn't a complete snapshot and recovery like Acronis is.
