Can I configure VMware Workstation so that a given guest VM sarts up automatically when the host starts, even if no user is logged on?

But you can start a guest automatically when the desktop is active: http://pubs.vmware.com/ws65_ace25/ws_user/ws_learning_cli_startup_linux.html#988596

No, not that I know of. WOrkstation is a desktop virtualization product (unlike VMware Server) and therefore it relies on an active desktop.

I have not tried them myself, but moa in kiosk mode maybe does the trick. Look at www.sanbarrow.com

It is entirely PE-mode based though..
