Umm without the proper context your question is ambiguous as best.
What do you mean by "locking the vmx"?
Where is your VM running is it running on a vSphere host?
Whatever the case.. it has nothing to do with the ability of a guest to update their antivirus or windows updates as that data is all stored in the vmdk files.
