Allocatting swap space on SSD, (Linux host)

I'm running Workstation 12.5 on a Linux host. Recently I've switched to a SSD for the host OS. I've reduced "swappiness" in the Linux OS and reduced the size of my defined swap to 2gb, (previously I'd used 8gb which is the size of the RAM). This has negatively impacted VM performance. Is there anything that I can do to improve performance other than increasing swap size? I gather that swapping is a bad thing for SSDs as it increases wear and tear on the limited life media. BTW, guest OS is Win8.1.

Thanks in advance.

System is an older laptop w/a Penryn Intel T9500 processor with the Linux OS running on a Samsung SSD, an additional spinning HD in the accessory bay provides storage for files as well as VMs. I've removed the 2gb swap space on the SSD and defined 20gb of swap space on the spinning HD. Note that in VM WS 12.5, Preferences-->Memory  "Allow some virtual memory to be swapped" is checked. This may have resolved the problem.
