After few hours, disk access goes crazy, locking Guest OS

This just started after years of using VMware Workstation. I'm on Workstation Pro 12.5.1 build-4542065.  After several hours of using the VM (Ubuntu 16.04 guest, Windows 10 host) all of a sudden the disk will start accessing to the point where the guest O/S lockups and I see this in the log:

016-11-09T11:56:32.686-05:00| vmx| I125: GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox timed out.

I am forced to hard power off the VM which of course causes problems. I've attached the full log file.

Hi,

The vmware.log file has this line:

2016-11-09T07:19:34.917-05:00| vmx| I125: DICT toolsInstallManager.updateCounter = "4"

2016-11-09T07:19:34.917-05:00| vmx| I125: DICT toolsInstallManager.lastInstallError = "21004"

which apparently stands for:

21004 – VIX_E_TOOLS_INSTALL_CANCELLED

You did not mention if you installed vmware tools yourself or if you are using the vmware tools as supplied by Ubuntu.

The first thing I would try would be re-installing VMware Tools (and powercycling the guest)

Then I notice that you have your virtual DVD connected, I would disconnect it if you are not using it.

On the serial port I see a buffer overrun, if you are not using thinprint then remove thinprint and the serial port.

Lastly I notice that the VM is ballooning around the time that your vmware tools times out, so you might address less memory to prevent the host from starting to reclaim memory.

A broken VMware Tools might cause some of the above observations.
