Advice: Upgrade from 11 to 15

Any words of wisdom on upgrading Workstation from 11 to the latest version? The host is Windows 10 1903.

A recent update KB4517389 caused the VM Workstation software to no longer launch. Removing the update solved the issue but I'm assuming moving to the latest version of VM Workstation will prevent the issue when the update eventually installs again.

I'm not entirely sure if the user has the Pro version. There is no indication, it just says VMWare Workstation 11.1.2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The "Pro" moniker on the product name is a pretty recent addition.  In the old days we had "VMware Player" and "VMware Workstation".  More recently (not sure if it was version 14 or 15) they changed it to "VMware Workstation Player" and "VMware Workstation Pro".  The products are basically the same, just with new names.

Anyway an upgrade is pretty straight-forward.  You can install 15 over an older version and it will upgrade in-place.  You can boot up VMs right away, but you might also need to "upgrade" each VM to use the latest features.  (The option to upgrade the VM hardware version is presented right on the information screen that you get when you open them, before you power them on.)  You can try version 15 in trial mode for 30 days to see if it works before paying for it.
