Adding SATA Drive

I have set up VMWARE Worksation 7 to use as a malware analysis machine for SATA drives, my host machine picks up the SATA drive fine but VmWare is unable to access it at power up.

  • My setup consists of a Windows 7 X64 Guest on a virtual disc, an external SATA drive is connected to my host which contains the infections.
  • On my host I set device manager to set the SATA drive to be offline.
  • I added the SATA drive using the Add Physical Disc wizard in Workstation.
  • I set the VMDK with full permissions for the everyone group.

VMWARE picks up the hard disc but when I try and start my virtual machine I get an error about permissions?

Adding the files manually to the Guest OS is not workable as they number 100GB+ has anyone had success adding SATA HDDs before to Workstation?

If you use physical disks for a VM you should start Workstation by right-click "run as admin"
If that does not help - disable UAC as well

The LockDismount tool worked beautifully, thanks for that!
