About legacy OS and new printers...

Hello,

I need to use old VB3 apps and that old Pentium 133 machine is about to break. I would like to change my old Deskjet LPT printer in the same time.

I have set up VMware with windows 98, and I don't expect any difficulties in transfering my data. My question however is about printers. Lets say that I want that PrintOMatic9k that only work under XP or later; I can't follow the common advice of sharing the printer inside XP because there isn't any drivers for Win98.

Sure, I /could/ buy a printer that still support Win98, but I lose the main interrest of virtualization: running the same applications in ten years.

Any ideas on how to do that ? (Exporting a virtual printer ?)

If your new printer understands PCL (the print language of the Deskjet), then just "lie" to the VM. Tell it that the printer is a Deskjet and install the drivers. In the past I have done this with printers that speak postscript and just used the Apple LaserWriter print driver in Windows 98.
