xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0

Hi,

I'm using VMware Player 3.1.3 on Windows Vista 7 64bit on an HP EliteBook laptop with nVidia graphics. My guest operating system is RHEL 5 64 bit. While the machine boots up I see an error that says:

     "Non-nVidia graphics...skipping driver installation"

Despite that, I can login. If I try something like xterm it fails to open the display, e.g.:

"xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :0"

Any ideas what I can do to get the display working?

Thanks,

Cory

I tried setting up a couple other linux VM's and they seem to be working so my current thinking is that this might be a linux problem, or problem with the way the VM was generated...

Have you installed the VMware Tools?

Thanks, Andre. I thought that was setup but it appears not to be. I can't figure out where to download the vmware-tools from - the docs assume you have the package but I don't know where to get it?

My steps:

1. From VMware Player, Virtual Machine> Install VMware Tools

2. I get a prompt at the bottom of VMware Player saying: Make sure that you are logged in to the guest operating system. Mount the virtual CD drive in the guest, launch a Terminal, and use tar to uncompress the installer. Then, execute vmware-install.pl to install VMware Tools.

3. Nothing happens so I press the Help button on the bottom left.

4. It tells me to mount the cdrom and install from there - but I don't have the installer to put on a cdrom so I'm kind of stuck

In the VMware Player Preferences, it says that all my software components are up to date.

Any more ideas?

Cory
