vmware player freezes during install

I'm trying to install vmware player on a win7 64-bit system.

During the "installing packages on the system" phase, near the end, it just freezes. I can still move the mouse around a bit etc, but after a while the whole system freezes completely.

When I reboot (after forced shutdown), it looks like vmware was installed, but when I try to open a machine/app in the player it says that certain packages are missing. So the install didn't finish properly.

The same happened when I tried installing vmware workstation.

Please help...

Thanks!

sometimes the installer does not find the file vmnetbridge.dll and popsup a windows to browse for the file - make sure that you are able to see any popups

I'm trying to install VMWare player on XP service pack 3 with all the latest patches:

Installation has halted on "Status: installing packages on the system" for an hour. No popups have appeared at any time.

The last messages from vminst.log:

Also, when I manually uninstalled after the first installation failure, the key AE11A35.... wasn't anywhere in the registry (some of the other stuff was, though).
