unexpected result copying a vm to a new physical machine

I have two laptops, both running XP Pro. On laptop 1 I have had vmplayer running several VM's for nearly a year. Just acquired 2d laptop. Installed VMplayer on it. On laptop 1, stopped all VMs, and copied the entire folder for one of the linux machines (Oracle linux, which is rebranded RHEL) over to laptop two. Was able to open and start it just fine, but the network config is all different. On the original, I had a static IP assigned, but on the copy to the new laptop, it came up using DHCP. The contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 is completely different in the two VM's. How could this happen?

I guess you clicked "I copied the VM" instead of "I moved it"

This will reset the MAC of the VM and as the consequence reset the network-config of some distros
