Worked like a charm!  I made one small change, swapping ";" for "&&".  Prolly wouldn't install anything if the first make didn't work, but just in case...

I'm still getting an 'unable to locate /dev/vmmon' error.  did I miss a step?

That fixed it.  Should have guessed, I haven't rebooted in a while so there was no reason the new modules would be loaded.

This is what helped me. I added the last line of command.

The foregoing all have failed.  Player remains unable to open a VM.  Player installs.  It can install a VM from ISO and run it but the VM cannot be restarted using the VM's restart command, and cannot be opened after reboot.

Over the past month:

• I have attempted this on Ubuntu 20.04 and three or four reinstalls of Ubuntu 22.04.
• I have attempted reinstall of VMware Player 16.2.3 fifteen or twenty times.
• I have attempted every one of the foregoing recommendations at least three times.

It works, I can run the VM, but the Network Interface goes Connected -> Disconnected and vice versa. Constantly.

There is another solution for this problem, which is caused by an error in the /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmmon.tar

I installed VMPlayer 17.0.x. The vmmon has totally chnged, and the error concerning vmmon,tar does not occur any more.
