"Unable to initialize installer database" under Gentoo

I have host Gentoo 2.6.26-r3 x86_64 with vmware-player 2.5.0.118166 and vmware-modules 1.0.0.23. Both seemed to install without error. The config script completed normally and set up networking. But when I execute vmplayer I get the errror message "Unable to initialize installer database."

I'm running everything as root.

Any debugging hints would be gratefully received.

I'm seeing the same exact problem here. 2.6.24-gentoo-r7, vmware-player 2.5.1.126130, vmware-modules 1.0.0.23. Installed via the layman vmware portage overlay. Anyone got any ideas?

Yes, I hit the same problem[/url], to solve: rm -rf /etc/vmware

Then try starting vmware again, you might need to remove that after you uninstall it, then reinstall vmware, and it's all fine.
