"Easy Install failed to install VMware tools"

As I started to create a VM for Ubuntu 12.10, VMware Player displayed a message saying that it recognizes this OS and will install it and VMware Tools with Easy Install. "Great idea," I thought to myself "I'm all in favor of easy."

And the install went fabulous, until VMware Player tried to install VMware Tools. That's where the process froze and went no further. Now, every time I try to start my VM the screen says "Installing VMware Tools...Please Wait."

How can I fix this?

Personally and general speaking I wouldn't use Easy Install, especially with Linux Distros! Smiley Wink  With some distros Easy Install does not properly size the /boot volume thus causing issues later on when upgrading kernels.  I also don't like what it does with it configuring two CD/DVD's and how it leaves things when done although it can be manually cleaned up.

I'd recommend not using East Install and instead select "I will install the operating system later" and then do a manual install of the Linux OS and then install VMware Tools afterwards.

So its perhaps should not be called "Easy Install".   Maybe it should be more accurately called " Not Install, Hang your system and waste 3hrs of your time Install"

Anyway, maybe Ill do that, is there someway to ship the VMware Tools install during the Ubuntu 12.04 installation process.. at this point?

I cant login, cant skip to continue installing Ubuntu, cant logout, cant manually install!

VMware tools is not on a CD but it keeps asking for the cd.... WTF!!?

Cant install the non-easy install way as cant read the screen ! I just get 24 small repeated ubuntu wallpapers with a tiny notification box that cant be read.

Frustrating !

The vmware-tools come on an iso-file - look for linux.iso

But I would not use "easy install" for Linux anyway ...

Hello,

I think you may find the solution is to modify the software update URL.

I have not tried applying my situation to a Linux Guest to verify this will work for your scenario.

However the following VMware Tool .iso files downloaded properly after the fix was applied and the VMware Tools Installer menu option began working as expected for a Windows 2008 x64 Guest. There is every possibility it will begin working for other Guests as well.

freebsd.iso

linux.iso

netware.iso

solaris.iso

windows.iso

winPre2k.iso
