I had the free workstation player. I am wondering if it had the serial key or license key for it? As I am thinking of upgrading to the pro? If it did have one where can it be found.
I'm not sure I understand your question. Workstation Player shouldn't require any sort of serial or license you need to save if you are only using it for personal reasons...
It does have "commercial key options" (which I am completely unfamiliar with).
Is the commercial use key for Player what you are asking about?
If not, you most likely need not worry, so long as you don't alter an existing VM to use options (in PRO which are) not available in Player such as snapshots and then expect it to work with Player afterward.
Hi,
You don't need the free player license for upgrading.
There's also no discount when upgrading from a free product to a paid one.

All of the above is true, but if you DID buy VMware Player there is probably a discount for moving to VMware Workstation Pro. You can find all your keys under My VMware and when upgrading, you need the key from there.
As such VMware Player is NOT a freeware product. You need a license key if you use it for commercial purposes. Technically, it doesn't require a key, but commercially and legally, it does. I have bought and upgraded many Player licensing, when using Player for training, for instance.
