kernel 2.6.20-1.2307.fc5 problem

I still have kernel 2239 loaded, and no problems with or without petr's patch. I have problem with kernel versions 2300 and 2307. When I go to build the modules with vmware-config.pl I get a compile error. Not so good, so I download and run petr's vmware-any-any-update108.tar.gz and run runme.pl It compiles ok and vmplayer starts, but it only runs a few seconds or minutes before it dies. I would report this as the instructions say, but I have applied petr's patch and running on FC 5 so I am doubly unsupported.

The log file says:

Mar 26 11:55:59: vcpu-0| MONITOR PANIC: vcpu-0:VMM fault: regs=0x2f74, exc=14, eip=0x60800

Stumped huh?

Let me ask another question. Does anyone have FC5 kernel 2307 running vmplayer with or without Petr's patch? Then again, if it's working, why would they look here?

Thanks in advance.

Does this happen with ANY guest, or with one particular guest?

I only tried the XP Guest. I don't use the others on any regular basis.

Tried with my Red Hat guest on and it came up with the same type of error messages. biggest difference is the entire pc did not freeze:

I tried the VM Player 2.0 beta, and that froze my whole system up after it ran for a few minutes. No message box.

We have a similar problem.

We have several users on hp amd laptops running FC5 as host using vmplayer to run XP. (whats curious is that we have chosen identical VM name and location to you !)

All was fine running kernels up to 2.6.18

Now I find with 2.6.19 and 2.6.20 after a few minutes the whole PC hangs and a powercycle is required.

There is usually a popup from Vmware - I sent this to vmware support but got no response.

the entry from the vmware.log is shown below

does it mean anything ?

What I have found is that 2 users are working OK on the new kernel.

2 users have the problem.

This means we have to wind back to an old kernel and then it's hard to get the ATI drivers working...

The only pattern I can see is that the machines that work are single core Turion nx6125

whereas the two that fail are dual core Turion nx6325.

I have edited the vmware config file so that only one cpu is used for the vm

Any help much appreciated

Peter

I'm sorry I am not able to provide specific error logs, other than to describe what I've seen.

I'm running WinXP Pro guest on VMPlayer 1.0.3 (with Petr's patches) on Fedora Core 5 x86_64, on a Dell Optiplex GX620 (Pentium D) CPU, and ATI's fglrx drivers (from Livna).

I've been seeing the freezes for all kernel versions post 2.6.18. The most recent kernel that I can somewhat run WinXP Pro stably on is kernel-2.6.18-1.2257.fc5. Any version from 2.6.19 onwards will cause system freeze and X11/Linux to lockup completely, at random times with different errors. (ping works, but can't remote ssh into the box after VMPlayer hangs).

Even so, running WinXP Pro on 2.6.18 has been less than stable, with random VM slowdowns and occasional Explorer crashes (bringing up the "Report Error" dialog) since mid-Feb 2007 (?) when Microsoft released a major bunch of critical fixes etc. Prior that that I have not had any problems that I remember.

tcwan,

Is that dual core? I also am running the fglrx video on an integrated radeon x200.

Yes, It's a Pentium D 2.8 GHz. (Can't remember the exact model number). 64-bit, No VT.

Tried using VMwarePlayer-e.x.p-42757 (2.0 beta) with kernel-2.6.20 today. I managed to get a BSOD (STOP 0x00001) within 30 minutes. However, it seems to run slightly smoother on 2.6.18 compared to Player 1.0.3.

This is exactly the same result I got.

VMWARE ARE YOU THERE?

YOUR BETA DOESN'T WORK EITHER!

Please don't complain about software not working on an unSupported host OS! If you want to guarantee that a company's software will work, please stick to the documented host system requirements!!!

Granted that 'unsupported' OSes are not guaranteed to work properly. However, it is not immediately apparent from the Release Notes (http://www.vmware.com/support/player/doc/releasenotes_player.html)

which kernel versions would be stable wrt. VMWare Player.

I don't track kernel releases for each of the listed distributions. A "kernel version >= xxx not currently supported" would've suffice to help folks avoid wasting time tracking down such issues unnecessarily.

Sorry to waste bandwidth on this, but the previous post was in reply to RDPetruska's comment. The forum didn't provide me any option to select who to reply to.

See pp 8-10 of the Player manual - "Supported Host Operating Systems" - lists distros AND versions, and the very last sentence states "Platforms not listed above are not supported."

For future reference, in each person's response, at the top right is a "reply" link.

Of course I can complain, for the squeaky wheel gets the oil!

I have seen posts for Ubuntu with a similar issue. And I think that if I load Ubuntu with the 2.6.19 kernel that I would see similar issues.

I know that you are watching, and you know you have a problem. And I will accept responsibility for not understanding at the time, that I can not just go and get new kernels and expect things to work.

Do you want to say to all the Fedora Core users NOT to buy your product?

You could do the FC users a favor and state for FC5 don't go past 2.6.18 for dual core or smp machines.

Unless you say otherwise, I will assume that this will not be fixed in the near future, and I will give this a try in a later beta or final release of the next version.

Thank you

First off, I am not an employee... I am a user just like yourself.

Second, please realize that there is a difference between a host OS which works and one that is Supported (capital S). For VMware to officially Support an OS, they must put resources into it... QA, testing, tech support, documentation, etc. They have limited resources.

Third, read the Fedora site VERY CAREFULLY. Even Red Hat does NOT formally support Fedora. FC is meant to be a cutting edge, testing platform. NOT a production stable one! It is where they test new things before including/adding them into their RHEL platform! THAT is why VMware (and other software companies) will not formally support FC.
