intermittant hang on startup of vm

Platform:

Dell Latitude E6500

Windows XP Pro

VM Player 3.0

Installed VM Player on Win XP Pro host and succesfully created/deleted/created several VMs, installing Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 and 5 (OEL is re-branded Red Hat). Things were going well .. had two VMs up at once, net communication working as expected, installed and ran Oracle databases. Then yesterday I started one of the VMs and it just hung at the splash screen. Task manager showed it running (not 'not responding') but the process list showed the vm* processes getting no cpu while system idle was getting 98 to 99 pct. VMPlayer window didn't respond to anything .. none of the menu bar items, not even the 'close' button. Had to kill it via Task Manager. Eventually rebooted the PC, and that resulted in several tasks not responding to shutdown, includeing one called (simply) "M". Even this didn't help. Eventually elected to delete the VM and rebuild it. Delete resulted in a message about disk being in use. Had to reboot the host.

Same thing happened today, only after second reboot of host, vm was able to start normally.

As mentioned, when it is hanging, Task manager shows 'running' but processes aren't getting any cpu and 'system idle' is getting 98% or more. Event log (system and application) showed nothing of interest.

Any ideas on what could be going on here?
