installing win 98se in VMware Player, can it be done?

I have Ubuntu installed as a VM on drive F. Can Win 98SE also be installed on drive F or does it need to be installed on drive C? I know Win 98 needs to be installed on C in a regular installation but I'm not clear on how this works when installing Win 98SE an as VM. In other words, can a virtual drive C be created with VMware Player or, in the case of Win 98SE, must the VM for it be on actual drive C?

It does not matter where you store the virtual disks of a VM.

Win98 will see its virtual disk as C:

Installing Win98 into a VM is not as easy as installing Ubuntu or XP or other modern OS.

You must start the setup by booting from a virtual floppy drive first - we have discussed this several times so you should be able to find instructions by using the search function

I have not found discussions in this forum telling me how to do this so I'm stymied. I went to downloaded winima81.exe

(North america link), and installed it in Win 7. I beileve I then created a virtual flolppy named VMware floppy.flp.

I then opened VMware Player and opened it's Help to search for info on installing a virtual floppy disk. I found this:

Add a Floppy Drive to a

Virtual Machine

You can add

two floppy drives to a virtual machine. A virtual floppy drive can

connect to a physical floppy drive on the host computer, to an existing

floppy image file, or to a blank floppy image file.

By default, floppy drive

is not connected when the virtual machine powers on.

Prerequisites

Shut down the virtual

machine to power it off.

Procedure|1|Select Virtual

Machine > Virtual Machine Settings.|

2

On the Hardware tab, click Add.

3

On the Hardware Type page, select Floppy Drive and click Next.

4

Follow the prompts to complete adding the floppy

drives.

5

In the Device

Status section, select the Connect at power on option to

connect the floppy drive when the virtual machine powers on.

However, that procedure does not work for me. When I open the Hardware tab (see step 2 above), Add is greyed out.

The virtual floppy drive, i.e. VMware floppy.flp, is locatged at file:///C:/Users/user/Documents/

Can someone tell me how to add the virtual floppy drive to VMware Player?

I do not understand your problems ?

Have you found a Win98 boot floppy image in the Internet ?

they usually comes as *.ima or *.flp files - and you then configure that file as the floppy drive.

To configure the floppy-drive of the VM the VM must be powered off.

In the vmx-file a floppy-image is configured like this

floppy0.present = "true"

floppy0.fileName = "start.flp"

floppy0.fileType = "file"

floppy0.startConnected = "true"

In the vmx-file a floppy-image is configured like this

floppy0.present = "true"

floppy0.fileName = "start.flp"

floppy0.fileType = "file"

floppy0.startConnected = "true"

I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't know what a vmx-file is. And, I have no clue what I'm supposed to do with the four lines starting floppy0 .... Can you explain this is laymen's terms?

I said that I found a Win 98 boot floppy image.
