can't ping virtual machine (vista guest, vista host)

On Vista as a host, I have another virtual Vista machine. I want to be able to at least ping the virtual machine from the real Vista in a host only config (I don't need the virtual machine to serve anything on the network).

I tried fixed IPs, but they don't seem to be pingable. I fiddled around and tried using others' configs, but still can't get it to work.

The Virtual Network Editor shows:

VMnet0 - bridged to ...

VMnet1 (Host-only) - subnet 192.168.216.0

VMnet8 (NAT) - subnet 192.168.255.0

They're all enabled.

However, pinging the fixed IP entered within the guest from the host results in "unreachable".

Pinging either 192.168.216.1 or 192.168.216.2 results in replies.

Should I just use these? Why isn't the fixed IP working?

forgot 2 mention:

ipconfig /all on the guest shows only the fixed ip

on the host,

C:\Users\zamolxis>ipconfig /all
